Male and female Wistar rats were given doses of 10, 30 or 90 mg per kg melitracen by mouth daily for 3 months. Food intake was not affected by the 10 mg per kg dose but was initially reduced by the larger doses and then gradually returned to normal. Bodyweight gain was not affected by the smaller doses but was reduced by the largest. On restriction of food intake, rats given the largest dose showed aggressive behaviour and increased excitability, whereas the smaller doses had a taming effect.
