Two discoveries concerning adrenergic pharmacology that were made in the late 1940s and 1950s have proven to be pivotal elements in delineating research goals in adrenergic pharmacology even up to the present time. The first of these was the descriptions by Ahlquist and coworkers (Ahlquist, 1948; Ahlquist and Levy, 1959) of multiple adrenergic receptors, which were classified as either alpha or beta.
